STORMS ROLL IN AS DO THE CALLS

Thursday, June 24, 2010 Late in the afternoon, severe thunderstorms rolled into Delaware and Chester Counties causing hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage, many injuries and leaving 200,000 people without power. Green Ridge was staffed with several crews throughout the storm and its aftermath. The first call for 63 was for trees and wires on Dutton's Mill Rd. in the area of Mercer Place.  Rescue 63 was in the area investigating the same while ATPD Ofc. R. Curl reported an accident with entrapment at Dutton's Mill and Creek Rds. just up the street from where we were. Due to our proximity, Chief 52-9 (R. Montella) advised us to proceed in. Rescue 63 arrived quickly and found a 2 vehicle MVC with one subject trapped in the driver's seat. The rescue's crew rapidly stabilized the vehicle and went to work on the door with the jaws and cutters. The occupant was extricated in about 5 minutes. The rescue packed up and headed over to Chief Engineer Tiger's residence and assisted him with removing a large tree branch that fell onto his house. We cleared that incident in about 30 minutes. Once back in the station, Engine 63 was sent to Woodcrest Ave. for wires. Utility 72 was already on location for some time when this call was dispatched and returned Co. 63. The next call was dispatched to Concord and Bridgewater for wires. Engine 63 arrived and found 2 high tension wires down on Bridgewater Road in close proximity to a house and several trees abutting the house. The resident from 2810 Concord reported smoke in his residence which was investigated and found to be from an AC unit.  While checking the neighboring residence at 2800 Concord, the high tension wire outside fell to the ground and began arching. A sump pump in the basement of 2800 was on fire and quickly extinguished. Crews evacuated the residence due to the closeness of the wires and established a safe area. A handline was deployed from Truck 63 in case the residence became involved and a supply line was established by Engine 72 from the hydrant in front of Northley Middle School to Truck 63. Crews remained on scene for about 2 hours until the hazard was mitigated and the equipment was restorted. Capt. B. Harris Jr. had the Concord Rd. Command and Lt. C. Repine had Operations. To close out the night, crews responded to the 700 block of Crystle Rd. for a CO detector. The alarm was tripped due to the power outage and crews headed back to the station for the night.
